What is North Korea’s Party Congress?

Want to know what all the hype is about for North Korea’s party congress? We’ll explain it here: North Korea will be holding the 7th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) in early May 2016 after more than 30 years since the last party congress. The commencement of the 7th Party Congress comes after the ending of the national 70-day campaign from Feb 23 – May 2 in an effort to propel the economy forward. The 7th Party Congress will set the party agenda and discuss former tasks that have been put forward during the 6th Party Congress, which was held on October 10, 1980. The Party Congress was initially scheduled to be held every four years, the 7th Party Congress has kept us waiting for more than three decades.

According to slogans published in Rodong Sinmun, the 7th party congress “would be held in the period when epoch-making changes are taking place in carrying out the revolutionary cause of Juche and the cause of the building of a thriving socialist nation would serve as a historic landmark of epochal significance in further strengthening the WPK into the great party of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il and accelerating the final victory under the leadership of Marshal Kim Jong Un.”
