How to Book a Tour to North Korea
So you’ve finally decided to take that trip to North Korea (the DPRK) that you’ve been secretly thinking about for a while. Now what?
Here are 7 easy steps for booking one of our group tours to the DPRK:
Step 1: Choose a tour
Check out our lineup of group tours. Click “Details” on the tour you want. Make sure to use our sub-tabs since some tours have their own group page (like the Pyongyang Marathon). If you want a private tour, contact us.
Once you have chosen a tour, you can book the tour right on our tour page:
- 1. Choose your dates (see flex-date options on some weekly tours)
- 2. Choose to pay the deposit or full amount*
- 3. Click the “Book Now” button.
*Choose the “double” rate applies per person if you’re sharing a room with someone. If you’re traveling alone, the single rate applies. In some cases, we can pair you with another single traveler for the double rate, upon request. If we can’t find anyone, we’ll bill you later for the full single rate.
*Pay the deposit if you’re booking more than 1 month out. If you’re booking within the month of departure date, please pay the full tour amount online. We accept all international credit cards (visa, mastercard, discover and amex). Inquire about RMB payment.
Step 2: Complete your visa application
Once you’ve booked, you can complete all of Step 2 online in your dashboard.
- 1. Complete visa application. If you’re completing the application for more than yourself, you can start a new application by going to “Your Account,” “View Checklist” and then “Start Another Tour Application.”
- 2. Upload a high-resolution scan of your passport biographical AND signature pages
- 3. Upload a high-resolution scan of passport style photo
Note: We process your DPRK visa and hand it to you at the start of the tour in China. The North Korean visas are separate documents that are not stamped in your passport.* We do not need your physical passport or any hard-copy documents before the tour. *If you’re a Chinese citizen, we have to get the visas stamped in your passport and will contact you after booking on how to mail us your passport.
Step 3: Purchase Your Tickets to China
We book your round-trip air ticket from Beijing/Shanghai to Pyongyang. However you must independently book your own travel to China.
We offer optional airport transfers in both Beijing and Shanghai and help with booking hotels. You can select the options during the checkout process. You can also take a taxi from the airport to the hotel for $20-$40 USD.
Step 4: Get a Chinese visa
It’s your responsibility to obtain a Chinese visa. Check with your local consulate on how to get one. It’s usually pretty straightforward, but you will need to show your China flight itinerary and a hotel reservation (even if for one night). You don’t even need to mention your DPRK trip unless asked.
If you will be in Beijing/Shanghai for less than 72/144 hours on your way to the DPRK, there is a new 72 hour visa-free transit policy. But note that there are some risks. Also it’s really important that you enter and depart from the same city (i.e. can do Beijing to DPRK but cannot do Beijing to Shanghai to DPRK).
Step 5: Get Travel Insurance
Medical coverage is required for the trip. Check with your current insurer to see if you’re covered.
Travel medical insurance is required for this trip. If your medical insurance covers the DPRK (most international plans do), then there is nothing else required. Just bring your insurance card with you on the trip in case of any emergencies. If it does not, then you can purchase affordable travel insurance directly through our partners at World Nomads using the link below:
Step 6: Pay Your Balance
If you didn’t pay the full amount during check-out, pay your balance 1 month before the tour.
Step 7: Meet Us in China and Begin Your North Korea Adventure!
This is it! After all of that preparation, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the trip of a lifetime!
